abducted at gunpoint. cal ripken's mother, vai is kidnapped. >> her condition and who police are looking for right now. >> hi. i'm kai jackson. and i'm mary bubala. here's what people are talking about. >> the matriarch of baltimore's legendary ripken family is abducted. right now, vai ripken is back home safe. but mike hellgren has the latest in aberdeen on the investigation. >> reporter: kai, police just wrap up a press conference. they said there were no demands for ransom. they do not know if the person who abducted her actually knew who she was. but boy, it has been a terrifying ordeal for the ripken family. they released a statement, thanking police for their work and getting her home safe. it was a tipster who spotted

her in the essex area that led to police finding ms. ripken. but a neighbor had told us that she was bound inside her home, that the abductor had tried to put duct tape over her eyes and he drove her around in her car. let's take a listen. >> reporter: 74-year-old violet ripken, the matriarch of the ripken family, was abducted at gunpoint inside the garage of her long-time home in aberdeen. she's the widow of former o's manager cal senior. a friend and neighbor who spoke to her after the ordeal said she was bound and forced inside her lincoln town car. >> she said she went into the garage. he was waiting there. he had a mask and gloves on. she couldn't recognize who he was. so he tied her up and put a mask on her. said he was going to do something else first. and told her to get in the car. he wanted her in the car. >> in her car? >> yes. wanted her car and money and

her to go with them. and that's what happened. >> every foot of the area, we believe that he drove throughout central maryland. and at this time, we are not sure what locations he was at, what time he was driving and what counties. >> a friend said ripken had some bruises. police say she was uninjured and was checked out by paramedics. she is now resting with family. >> oh, yeah. she was tied, hand and foot. yeah. yeah. she was sore from that, of course. >> at this time, we don't know what, if any, relationship there was, between the perpetrator of this crime and the ripken family. >> reporter: and at this hour, the gunman remains on the loose. he was wearing camouflaged article of clothing. perhaps in his late 30s, early 40s. they are still looking for him. kai, back to you. >> all right, mike. thank you. mike hellgren, reporting live from aberdeen. once again, here's the description of a suspect in the vai ripken abduct. he is believed to be in his

late 30s, early 40s, wearing i- glasses, and light colored shirt. anyone with information about this suspect is urged to contact aberdeen police. we'll have latest on the search for the suspect and more on vi ripken coming up at 6:00. if you want to carry a handgun in maryland, it will soon get easier. alex demetrick is live in the newsroom with more on the controversial issue. alex? >> the requirement that required many to apply for permits is being struck down. a court order strikes down a requirement that applicants show a substantial reason to carry and conceal a firearm. gun proponents say they expect tens of thousands of marylanders to be granted a carry license. the brady center for gun violence calls the change reckless. attorney general doug gansler is appealing the change and may ask the court of appeals to delay it until such an appeal

is decided. >> baltimore resident ray willard. hear from his attorney coming up all new at 5:00 and 6:00. the first memorial service is held today for a victim of the colorado movie massacre. teresa garcia is there and reports for wjz from aurora, colorado. >> reporter: family members and friends of gordon cowell attended a church service in denver today. the 51-year-old father of four was one of 12 people killed during the midnight showing of batman. crowden was at the show with his two teenage daughters who were not hurt. >> i'm really sad about what everyone is going try. >> reporter: crowd's family's was seen crying at the theater. one of his daughters wrote on a cross, dad, it was a surreal, disoriented night, what was certain was your calling to us. i love you. >> he was a great dad. an absolute tragedy. >> reporter: before this, the suspected gunman reportedly mailed a notebook, full of

details of how he was going to kill people. a law enforcement was quoted as saying holmes sent it to the university of colorado psychitree, but it sat -- psychiatry, but it sat unopened in the mailroom. >> they can take ballistics evidence that will show them the trajectory of the bullets. >> reporter: police are expected to return control of the theater to its owners on wednesday. for now, it remains an active crime scene. in aurora, colorado, teresa garcia, wjz eyewitness news. >> holmes' neighbors were hoping to return to their apartments today. but investigators are still processing evidence inside his apartment. stay with wjz for complete coverage of the aurora tragedy. for the latest on the investigation and the victims, log onto wjz.com. a swim to cool off in the heat turns deadly in laurel. monique griego is live with more on the victim. monique.

>> 21-year-old khalif richardson was pulled from a pond last night. emergency crews were called to an apartment complex on old stagecoach road, just before 9:00. a rescue boat and divers then entered the waters to search for a missing swimmer. they then used infrared equipment. richardson was pulled from the pond around 10:30 last night, and he was later pronounce -- pronounced dead at a hospital. >> an autopsy will determine how richardson died. >> it's hard to get a more perfect, late july day in maryland. outside, the sky is blue. humidity is low. temperatures close to normal. wjz has weather and traffic together. meteorologist bernadette woods is here with the updated numbers from first warning weather. bern, there's one thing i would change about today. >> okay. >> nothing. >> there you go. sitcom star. >> reporter: the man most famous for moving on up to a deluxe apartment, died at the age of 74. el paso police say sherman helmsley was found in his house. his agent confirms he passed away. the actor first rose to fame in 1971, playing george jefferson on "all in the family." two years later, helmsley played in a spinoff. he made an art out of the joke. >> i'll have to go over the boss's head. >> it will be a short trip. >> reporter: helmsley played on broadway. he sang, danced, even released a single in 1989, called ain't that a kick in the head. he still made cameos on tv shows and walked the red carpet. born in philadelphia, he had no children or wife. edward lawrence, wjz eyewitness news. >> an autopsy will determine

how sherman helmsley died. a shoplifter in central florida leaves behind a key piece of evidence at the scene of the crime. her baby. the woman left her 1-year-old son in a shopping cart outside a wal-mart cart in gainesville. after an employee caught her and her sister stealing. she's booking down the street. they managed to escape. but both women were arrested outside a dance club the next day. they now face child neglect charges, as well as felony theft. just-released video is reigniting the debate over safety at sea world. the disturbing 15-minute video shows a killer whale attacking its trainer during a performance six years ago. >> reporter: when whale trainer ken peters dove into the water, he was ready for the finale of this 2006 sea world show in san diego. instead of the planned spectacle, where the trainer is launched into the air, kepsacka, a 5,000-pound female whale, grabbed him by the ankles, thrashed him around and pulls him to the bottom of the

pool. >> it goes on and on and on. it must have been terrifying. >> reporter: david kirby wrote death at sea world. he believes she was agitated by the cries of henearby -- her nearby calf. >> imagine being a mother and your child is vying for you and you -- crying for you and you are not allowed to go see your child. it might make her angry. we see her pull him down to the bottom. then she brings him back up. then you think, thank god, she's not going to kill him. and you're trying to remain calm. and you don't know what is going to happen next. then she decides to go back down. >> kepsacka turned and came after him. peters, now with a broken foot, barely managed to get away. a california workplace safety investigator said if it hasn't killed already, it is only a matter of time before it does

happen. and four years later it does happen. trainer dawn brancheau was killed. the park appealed, but lost last week. >> they called this chilling, as he upheld the recommendation to keep trainers out of the water. by the way, trainer train -- the trainer still works at sea world. dow was up. the other markets are down. dow up 59. s&p down a fraction. nasdaq off 9. let's go to new york where alexis christoforous has tonight's cbs money watch update. >> fewer americans bought a new home last month. the commerce department says sales plunged more than 8% to a five-month low. experts say record low mortgage rates are not enough to offset a weak job market and convince people to buy a home.

there are new concerns about radio shack. after the retailer reported an unexpected second quarter loss. the company also suspended its dev dend to save -- dividend to save money and pay down debt. but it was a record quarter at u.s. airways. the airline says profits tripled from april to june, as fares rose and fuel prices fell. toyota has reclaimed the title of the world's top automaker. the japanese company has overcome safety recalls and natural disasters to retake the title from general motors. it seems the former ceo of citigroup has had a change of heart. sandy wild built citigroup into a mega bank. now he says mega banks should be broken up. wild believes investment banks should be split from consumer banks if they want to rebuild trust. that would mean breaking up jp morgan chase, citigroup and bank of america. for more, go to

cbsmoneywatch.com. in new york, i'm alexis christoforous. it was a hoax that gripped the nation. and now, pieces of the balloon boy's infamous flying saucer are available as trading cards. the current owner of the balloon struck a deal with the company "tops" to use a segment of the mylar saucer for individual trading cards. the silver helium balloon first made headlines in 2009 when the colorado couple said their son had floated away in it. he didn't, as we all now know. and it was just an elaborate practical joke. i'm thinking they're using them for the packaging, not the cards, correct? >> i think so. >> does that make sense? >> in mylar packaging. >> yes. and mylar is the basic composition of balloons you get out of a store today anyway. >> right. but will you know? will they say balloon boy's wrapping? >> i don't know how you -- >> bizarre. yes. >> all right. the bizarre story. coming up on eyewitness news at 4:00.

it is a perfect 10 day. hard to believe it is 10 -- >> saturating a 10. >> of july. if it goes off the scale, it goes off the scale. >> i agree. this is a beautiful afternoon. it's hard to mess with this afternoon. and enjoy it today. we know this is july in baltimore. of course the heat is going to be returning. take a look at temperatures right now. 87 degrees where s where we've topped out at so far. that is our average. very typical day, as far as averages go. 69 is where we started out the day. 67 is the average.

now, notice that record of 100. we're getting much closer to that tomorrow. but we'll get to that in just a moment. 86 is where we sit right now in baltimore. look at all of these 80s out there. even 70s at the ocean. just jumped to 81 degrees in oakland. but the biggest thing on this map is the dew point way down to 51 degrees. that's why it feels so refreshing outside, compared to what it felt like yesterday. the winds out of the west are going to really start to pick up tomorrow and turn a little more so to the south and tap into what we're going to see in a moment. but because of that, it's going to bring heat our way. and because of that, a heat advisory goes into effect, starting at noon, continuing through 8:00 p.m. and this is the heat that we are going to be dealing with. the middle of the country really just has not gotten a break for a while now. triple digits from oklahoma to iowa once again. as a new front moves our way, it's going to tap into that heat once again and draw it to the east coast. so here's that front, sitting way up to the north right now. it gets a little closer tomorrow.

over the ohio valley. making its way toward western maryland. it will have severe weather with it over the ohio valley. for us, the chance for a shower or thunderstorm. it is more so friday, though, when that front gets a little closer, that we're going to see a better chance for scattered showers and thunderstorms and the chance for showers to be strong to maybe even severe. the front sort of stalls out over us, heading into saturday. so again the chance for scattered showers and storms. but it won't be quite as hot by saturday. it's not going to be like last saturday, where we only got to 69 degrees. on the waters, there's the winds picking up tomorrow afternoon. small craft advisory goes back into effect. and the forecast looks like this. for tonight, we're dropping down into the 60s. tomorrow, though, you get the idea that the heat is coming. 99 degrees tomorrow afternoon. friday, 98. chance for thunderstorms around here. and then it knocks down a little bit, heading into the weekend. but the next few days are going to be hot. humidity building tomorrow afternoon. more so on friday.

it is 4:29. 86 degrees. beautifully sunny. hello. thanks for staying with eyewitness news. i'm denise koch. vic is off today. here's what people are talking about. the streets of anaheim, california, erupt in violent protest. edward lawrence reports for wjz on what is pinning police against angry citizens. >> reporter: police officers fired pepper spray balls at hundreds of demonstrators in anaheim. the crowd threw rocks and a molotov cocktail at police, lit trash cans on fire, and smashed store windows. 21 people were arrested. >> our job is to protect property and life. our job isn't to stand back in the back and let anarchists or rioters damage property and

injure people. >> reporter: protestors are wanting to know why police used deadly force in two shootings. the family of one man killed have filed a $51 million lawsuit against the city. >> we want the officers to be arrested for the execution of my son, manuel. >> reporter: police say 25-year- old manuel diaz was acting suspiciously with two other men and ran. they say he would not stop when they ordered him to. and he threw something onto the roof of a nearby apartment complex. >> the two officers are on paid administrative leave while investigators look into the case. >> the first step is to get to the truth. and that takes patience and calm. >> reporter: the shooting sparked four days of unrest. tuesday, rioters threw chairs and rocks. >> i was sitting on the corner when a rock hit the window. >> the anaheim city council called for an investigation into the shooting. >> reporter: in los angeles, edward lawrence, wjz eyewitness news. >> now, the other police- involved shooting that is

sparking the protest happened sunday. police say they returned fire after a suspected gang member ran from a stolen vehicle and shot at them. well, one of five men charged with plotting to bomb an ohio bridge, pleads guilty and agrees to testify against his co-defendants. kai is in the newsroom with more on what this means for the case. kai? >> that's right. lawyers for 35-year-old anthony hane are hoping for leniency. investigators say the group, dubbed anarchists, planted what turned out to be a dud bomb, provided by an undercover agent. they then tried to detonate it, using text messages from cell phones. the bridge links two wethy suburbs. -- wealthy suburbs. defendants could face life in prison if convicted. >> the other four men have yet to plead. batman star christian bale visits colorado. donations to help the victims and relatives, reaches $2 million. >> reporter: the star of the batman movie, actor christian

bale, made an appearance tuesday. he met with victims at a local hospital. he also visited the growing memorial near the theater. there are flowers, candles and stuffed animals, and 12 crosses on a hill, one for each person who died. amid the death, there is new life. baby hugo was born tuesday. his mother and father were caught in the attack. katie medley and her unborn child were not hurt, but caleb medley was shot in the face. he lost his right eye, has some brain damage and is in critical condition in a medically- induced coma. the baby's uncle went on camera. >> i guess he moved his hand towards the baby, trying to -- trying to feel his son, trying to touch him. his heart rate -- there was a change in it. well, best way to describe it is bittersweet. because we were all looking forward to this. we were all excited about -- and it is employ it is -- and

it is. it is a silver lining to a very dark cloud. >> i'm shelby lynn reporting. the first funeral is being held today. 51-year-old gordon cowden will be laid to rest. chad everett, starring in tv's medical center, has died. everett died in his home in los angeles tuesday. he had been battling lung cancer for more than a year. everett also did guest stints on murder she wrote, the love boat, cybil and the nanny. he is vur vived by -- survived by two daughters and six grandchildren. he was 76 years old. cal ripken's mother, abducted at gunpoint. she is home safe. but the search is on for a suspect. a man abducted violet ripken between 7:00 and 8:00 a.m. tuesday. forced her into a 1998 lincoln town car. she was found this morning in her are canear -- in her car near her home in aberdeen. police are investigating. and baltimore police are

looking for a suspect. he is described as a white male, believed to be in his late 30s or early 40s. he was wearing eyeglasses, a light-colored shirt and camouflaged pants. if you think you have information on this suspect, you're urged to contact aberdeen police. police say the suspect should be considered armed and dangerous. and we'll, of course, have the latest on the search for the suspect and more on vi ripken, coming up at 5:00 and 6:00. a recall issued on older baby strollers. monique griego is in the newsroom with details for parents. >> reporter: the consumer product safety commission announced the recall, involving more than 200,000 peg perego strollers. the agency says there is a major risk of entrapment and strangulation for infants younger than 12 months if not harnessed properly. this shows the two under recall. the venesia and play co 3 strollers. they were manufactured between january 2004 and september 2007.

this comes after the death of a 6-year-old california boy, after his head was trapped between the stroller's seat and tray. >> thank you. in 2006, a 7-month-old girl nearly died in similar circumstances. more than 100 ponies are are taking a dip as part of an historic swim. you're looking at the 87th edition of the pony swim. the swim across the channel. dates to the early 1920s. it was, of course, made famous by marguerite henry's novel, mystery of chinka teak. each year, the ponies are auctioned, some of them, anyway, to help the fire department. it is so they don't overpopulate them. very mild humidity. bob is here first with the updated numbers from first warning weather. bob? >> believe it or not, today's temperature got to 87. that is smack dab normal on

this date. but the humidity, the dew point was so low, most people thought it was probably around 80. right now, it's still in the mid-80s, around 86. but the dew point is only 51 degrees. which makes the 86 feel like 84. actually going in the other direction. now, we'll also be going the other direction tomorrow. because the dew point tomorrow may get up to 70. because of that, temperatures also in the upper 90s expected tomorrow. and because of that, from noon to 8:00, we have a heat advisory going into effect for most of the region. unfortunately, it's going to feel like 100 to 105 tomorrow. that's a big jump from this afternoon. so take it easy. at least through tomorrow. denise? >> that's a leap. that's not a jump. thank you, bob. let's go to kristy breslin with traffic control. a couple of delays out there. but lots of act -- accidents. southwestern boulevard to security boulevard. the north side of the inner

at the maryland zoo. they're 16 feet tall. but their home is nearly 50 feet old. he told me a makeover is under way. >> we put about $150,000 in the giraffe house a year ago. but we didn't have enough money to address some of the lighting issues that we've had. [ applause ] >> reporter: that's changed with the cutting of a green ribbon, celebrating the installation of new energy- efficient l.e.d. lighting. >> this is providing better illumination, providing a better living situation for the giraffe, and it's saving the zoo money. >> reporter: the public-private partnership includes wjz, elephant insurance, and cbs ecomedia. >> we're investing all the time, trying to attract customers. and we can take a piece of that and give it back to the community. and this particular is giving it back to the maryland zoo. >> how are you doing, bud? >> with 18-inch tongues.

a possible kidnapping caught on tape in new york. and now police are trying to figure out what happened. take a look at the car on the right side of the screen. police say the vehicle drove into a store parking lot. then the driver allegedly took a woman out of that car and stuffed her in the trunk. now, a witness called police. investigators have not ruled out the possibility that the incident could be a prank. well, tempers boil over in dallas texas. neighbors took to the streets to protest a fatal officer- involved shooting tuesday night. witnesses claimed police shot an unarmed man in the back as he was running away. now, the incident is under investigation but no one was arrested at the protest. there is still no sign of

two young cousins, iowa cousins, missing for nearly two weeks. they went for a bike ride, july 13th and then disappeared. as tom foreman explains, investigators believe they are still alive. >> reporter: a week and a half since 8-year-old elizabeth collins and 10-year-old lyric cook morris, went for a bike ride, and still there is no sign of what happened to them. despite the efforts of hundreds of volunteers, dozens of police, the fbi, and even tracking dogs, investigators appear to have few clues. eliz beth's patients on abc's good morning america this week. >> they do have a couple of leads. and that is it. >> it's as those they disappeared into thin air in broad daylight. >> reporter: shortly after they vanished, attention focused on 25 acres myers lake. the girls' bikes and a purse were found not far from it. and dogs indicated they might be in the water. but after an exhaustive search,

which included sonar and partially draining the lake. >> investigators are confident that the two girls are not in myers lake. this case is now being handled as an abduction. >> that revelation led to a fresh surge of hope for some searchers, especially when it came along with police claims that lyric's parents, misty and dan morissy, who have had drug troubles in the past be were not fully cooperating. >> i did a drug deft this -- test this morning. dan has to do his later. several of our family members did theirs yesterday. >> reporter: since then, however, police suggest the couple has become more helpful. the mother taking a second polygraph test, when she -- which she says she passed. and the mystery has grown deeper. >> reporter: police have put out a call for a man boating on the lake. notas -- not as a suspect. they just want to know if he saw something. days after receiving unprecedented penalties from the ncaa.

patients across london to keep track of pollution levels. in london, monica villamizar, wjz eyewitness news. >> environmental experts expect pollution levels to be moderate this week in london, which they say could still cause issues for anyone with breathing problems. police stumble upon an arsenal of home made weapons during a raid in oklahoma. bomb experts had to detonate the home made explosives seized from the house. officers were looking for stolen property, when they found 70 grams of explosives materials. officers also found a makeshift cannon. three people inside that home were arrested. a huge eruption in japan spews ash miles into the air and it's all caught on tape. take a look at this time lapsed video, showing the volcano erupting. the event blanketed residents with several inches of ash. no one was injured. and emergency crews are not
